Magic Melodyland
A downloadable game for Windows
June 21st, 2025: Gameplay Tips
- You can move throughout the world via teleportation, using the joystick on the right-hand controller.
- The houses in the Sound Playground level do not do anything (yet…).
- There is a crow standing on top of a log near each learning activity in the Sound Playground. Those crows give a small amount of guidance related to the activities! Stand right in front of them to see what they have to say.
- When you have access to the Note Garden (the flowers with shiny spheres on top), you can generate a Note Orb by reaching your hand into a sphere — when you hear a note, press the hand trigger! The Note Orbs can be used on the Chord Progression Carousel and in the Composition Clearing.
- To generate a Note Box in the Triad area, point at one of the reference Note Boxes lined up under the Scale System, then press the hand trigger.
- The runes in the Composition Clearing allow you to navigate through your composition. They are activated by gently pushing them (they should move backwards a bit in response) with your controller.
- The tempo game in the Sound Playground is perhaps the most “still a work in progress” area of the project — all you can really do there is press down on the “buttons” to change the tempo of the machine until the deer congratulates you on your success and moves to its next tempo.
- The Sound Playground’s Sea of Scales game is activated by pressing down on the red button on the pedestal at the top of the stairs!
I intend to add more in-game guidance, but that will take some time; in the meantime, please leave a comment here or reach out to me directly if you have any questions! ❤️

I originally built this experimental VR space for exploratory musical learning and whimsical composition in 2023, as part of my Master's thesis for NYU's Integrated Design and Media program. As a bit of a perfectionist, I kept telling myself that I'd release a Magic Melodyland build "after I fix just oooone more thing!"
Well, after two years...I still had at least 100 improvements and/or new features I would have liked to make before releasing this project. 😂 However, to avoid keeping the Magic Melodyland fans waiting for all eternity, I decided that whether or not I felt ready, it was time to share version one with the world.
I hope you have a magical time exploring the musical worlds of the Sound Playground and the Composition Clearing . ❤️

- Connect your Quest2 to your Windows computer with a link cable.
- On your Quest2, go to "Settings," then "Link." From there, select "Launch."

~ SOME NOTES ~
- Please note that the game may appear with this name on your Quest 2's library page: "MusicInVR-Win64-Shipping." If you see that name, please don't worry -- that's still the same piece of software, just with an outdated name.
- Please do not delete any of the files included with your download! In particular, if you delete
MagicMelodyland/Windows/MusicInVR/Content,
the Composition Clearing will no longer be able to save or load your work correctly.
